MTN to lease spectrum from T2 Mobile

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc is set to enter into a lease agreement with T2 Mobile Limited, formerly 9Mobile for a spectrum.

The leading telecommunications company made this known in a corporate disclosure to the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) following approval granted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

According to the notice, effective October 1, 2025, MTN will lease 5MHz frequency division duplex (FDD) in the 900MHz band and 15MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band from T2 Mobile for a period of three years. 

The transaction is designed to support MTN’s national roaming agreement with T2 and enhance network capacity to accommodate additional traffic from T2 customers.

Commenting on the development, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, said the milestone aligns with the company’s Ambition 2025 strategy and underscores its commitment to delivering reliable and high-quality connectivity.

“This approval allows us to leverage additional spectrum resources to expand broadband access in a cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable manner,” Toriola said. 

“It also reflects our efforts to foster collaboration within the telecom sector and promote digital inclusion across Nigeria.”

In the same notice to NGX, MTN disclosed that it will not renew its current lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Ltd (Ntel), which covers 5MHz FDD in the 900MHz band and 10MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band across 17 states. The agreement expires on November 29, 2025.
