Minna deaths: Independent Committee commences sittings over 37 deaths in NSCDC custody

The Independent Committee of Inquiry established to investigate the reported deaths of 37 individuals in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has officially commenced its sittings.

The panel’s launch follows its recent inauguration by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Committee’s Secretary, Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, the panel held its inaugural meeting immediately after being sworn in to adopt a comprehensive work plan for the investigation.

Under this framework, the Committee will visit relevant sites, collaborate with key government agencies, and conduct interviews with survivors, suspects, and other individuals possessing material knowledge of the incident.

Investigators will also gather documentation and physical evidence required to uncover the facts surrounding the tragedy. Additionally, the Committee’s medical team has already initiated specialized evaluations to determine the precise causes, mechanisms, and manners of death.

Appealing for public support, the panel announced plans to invite memoranda from interested individuals and organizations, with specific guidelines regarding submission procedures and physical presentation schedules to be released soon.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, the Committee promised a thorough, fair, and evidence-based inquiry while pledging to keep the public updated on its progress.
