LAWMA embarks on cleaning of Lagos-Badagry axis

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has commenced immediate cleaning and evacuation operations along the Lagos-Badagry corridor, deploying operational teams and equipment to restore environmental order and improve sanitation across the axis.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this during a comprehensive monitoring and intervention exercise conducted across identified waste blackspots in the axis on Saturday.
Dr. Gbadegesin stated that the intervention formed part of a broader compliance and environmental sustainability drive aimed at protecting public health and maintaining urban aesthetics along the major transit corridor.
He stressed that while cleanup operations were ongoing, enforcement measures would be intensified to prevent a recurrence of illegal dumping in the affected locations.
He urged residents, traders and transport operators along the axis to dispose of waste only through assigned Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators and comply strictly with environmental regulations.
The monitoring exercise covered key areas including Orile, Doyin, Alaba Rago, Agric, Barracks Iyana-Iba and Agbara, where the cleanup operations were ongoing.
The MD/CEO further revealed that the agency would embark on verifying property-level compliance with Private Sector Participant (PSP) waste collection payment obligations.
According to the LAWMA Boss, the operation would involve routine checks requiring residents, commercial premises, and business operators to present evidence of registration and payment to their assigned PSP operators.
He stated that the exercise would help identify properties without valid PSP arrangements and close service gaps that contribute to illegal dumping and blackspot formation.
He emphasised that environmental compliance was a shared responsibility, noting that consistent waste collection depended on both resident participation and operator accountability.
He urged residents and businesses in Apapa-Iganmu to regularise their PSP payments and maintain proper waste storage practices ahead of the commencement of the enforcement exercise.
