The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has released its 2025 annual performance report, revealing a dual strategy of rigorous enforcement and rapid emergency response that resulted in the impoundment of 17,169 vehicles and the successful rescue of 1,075 accident victims.
These operations were executed through an integrated framework of intelligence-driven deployment and inter-agency coordination, targeting high-risk corridors to ensure that traffic violators were penalized while life-saving interventions reached crash sites with minimal delay.
The agency’s enforcement data highlights a significant focus on both private and commercial transport sectors, with 5,581 private cars and 10,825 commercial vehicles removed from the roads for offenses ranging from reckless driving and chronic overloading to severe mechanical deficiencies.
A particularly stringent stance was maintained against one-way violations, with 760 vehicles cited for driving against the flow of traffic, a maneuver identified by officials as a primary catalyst for head-on collisions and fatalities within the metropolis.
General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, characterized the year’s activities as a deliberate transition toward proactive traffic governance.
He noted that while the impoundment of vehicles serves as a necessary deterrent to remove unsafe machinery from circulation, the ultimate goal is to foster a culture of voluntary compliance through modern technology and sustained public enlightenment.
The report identified excessive speed, driver fatigue, and impaired driving as the leading causes of road mishaps, prompting the arrest of 860 offenders throughout the year to reinforce the state’s zero-tolerance policy for endangerment.
Looking ahead, LASTMA has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening the use of technology-driven monitoring and continuous officer training to further improve safety outcomes.
The agency emphasized that long-term success depends on the active cooperation of transport unions and individual motorists alike. By maintaining its focus on vehicle roadworthiness and adherence to speed limits, LASTMA aims to continue its trajectory of reducing traffic crashes and ensuring that the streets of Lagos remain safe for all road users.
