The Port of Lamu has successfully offloaded its second major shipment of heavy construction machinery for the multi-trillion-shilling Dangote East Africa Refinery project following its groundbreaking ceremony last month.
The vessel MV Great Prosperity docked to discharge 154 heavy machinery units, comprising articulated dump trucks and assorted specialized hardware totaling 8,213 metric tons.
Caleb Nthusi, an Operations Executive at Inchcape Shipping and the vessel’s local agent, confirmed that the delivery forms the opening phase of an expansive logistics pipeline designed to feed the massive industrial undertaking.
Additional fleets carrying heavy equipment are scheduled to arrive through the port over the coming months to keep construction on an aggressive timeline.
Once fully operational, the Sh2.2 trillion facility is projected to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Beyond bolstering regional energy security, the refinery is structured to serve as an anchor for a wider industrial ecosystem, catalyzing commercial growth across Kenya’s manufacturing, transport, and logistics sectors.
The Dangote refinery project is expected to drive a continuous stream of crude oil carriers and cargo ships to the Port of Lamu, cementing its status as a premier energy and logistics gateway while fully unlocking the potential of the Lamu Port–South Sudan–Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor for regional trade.
