Lagos shuts Eko bridge for emergency safety repairs

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has announced the emergency closure of the Eko Bridge, outbound to Lagos Island, to facilitate critical safety investigations and structural repairs.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, confirmed in a statement on Sunday that the shutdown will take effect on Tuesday, 12th May, 2026.

The intervention targets the specific stretch between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa, where engineering teams are expected to conduct rigorous assessments to ensure the continued integrity of the infrastructure.

While the closure affects commuters heading out of the Island, the Ministry clarified that the inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain fully operational, allowing traffic to flow into the commercial hub as usual.

To mitigate the inevitable congestion, the state government has strongly advised the motoring public to utilize the Third Mainland Bridge as the primary alternative for reaching their destinations.

Mr. Osiyemi assured residents that the state is prioritizing order and security during the repair period. A heavy deployment of traffic management officers and security personnel is expected along all strategic alternative routes to provide guidance and minimize delays for commuters.

The government has appealed for the patience and cooperation of all road users, emphasizing that the temporary inconvenience is a necessary measure to prevent potential hazards and ensure long-term public safety on one of the city’s most vital transport arteries.
