The Lagos State Government has directed psychiatric evaluations for 18 motorists arrested for driving against traffic, describing the measure as a firm step to address the increasing disregard for traffic regulations in the state.

The order, issued through the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), stipulates that all drivers apprehended for one-way violations must undergo full psychiatric assessments before prosecution.

In a statement signed by Mr Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, on behalf of the General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the agency outlined the details of the directive.

Bakare-Oki explained that the initiative is part of a wider plan by the state government to restore order and discipline on Lagos roads. He clarified that the psychiatric checks are intended to be corrective and preventative.

“The Lagos State Government regards this approach as both preventive and rehabilitative, aimed at reforming errant drivers and discouraging would-be offenders,” the statement noted.

Bakare-Oki revealed that the legal processes for the swift arraignment of the 18 offenders had been completed, with psychiatric assessment forming an integral part of the prosecution procedure.

He stated that the measure reflects international best practices in traffic psychology and public safety enforcement, noting that reckless driving continues to endanger lives, damage infrastructure and disrupt order.

“Despite sustained awareness campaigns, many motorists keep flouting traffic regulations, leading to fatal crashes and the deterioration of public assets,” he said.

He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to upholding traffic laws and called on all residents to obey road safety guidelines.

The state government confirmed that the psychiatric testing programme would continue as part of its broader clampdown on indiscipline and dangerous driving on Lagos roads.
