Lagos investing in waste infrastructure to improve collection — Wahab

The Lagos State Government says it is investing significantly in waste management infrastructure to improve collection, disposal and service delivery across the state.

The newsmen report that the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Friday.

Wahab spoke on TVC News Breakfast and later shared details of the government’s ongoing investments on his X handle.

He said the investments were part of the administration’s efforts to transform waste management operations and improve environmental services across Lagos.

According to him, the projects include rehabilitation of key operational facilities, construction of new Transfer Loading Stations and expansion of waste disposal infrastructure.

He said the long-term investments were aimed at improving operational efficiency and strengthening waste management services across the state.

Wahab, however, said government investment alone could not guarantee a cleaner environment without active participation from residents and businesses.

He urged households and businesses to patronise their assigned Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators and pay promptly for waste collection services.

The commissioner also called on residents to dispose of waste responsibly, stressing that sustainable environmental management required cooperation among government, PSP operators and residents.

“A cleaner Lagos depends on a genuine partnership between government, PSP operators and residents.

“Every household and business has a responsibility to patronise its assigned PSP operator, pay for waste collection services promptly, and dispose of waste responsibly,” he said.

Wahab reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.

He said LAWMA would continue to pursue strategic investments, innovation, stronger partnerships and continuous improvement of waste management systems.

The commissioner also appreciated TVC News for providing a platform to engage Lagos residents on waste management challenges and ongoing reforms in the sector.
