Lagos intensifies crackdown on single-use plastics, seizes items from supermarkets

The Lagos State Government has stepped up enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics, seizing prohibited items from supermarkets across the state.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the operation in a video shared on his official X handle on Wednesday.

The footage showed enforcement officers clearing plastic cups, straws, and other disposable items from the shelves of Blenco Supermarket in Lekki. Wahab explained that the move formed part of a sustained campaign to address environmental hazards caused by the unchecked use and disposal of plastics.

“Our enforcement team today visited Blenco Supermarket in Lekki to enforce the ban on single-use plastics,” he said.

The state government has consistently cautioned businesses and individuals to adhere to the directive, noting that plastic waste has emerged as a significant cause of flooding, pollution, and environmental degradation across Lagos.

Officials have also confirmed that inspections will continue in the coming days, with more supermarkets and retail outlets expected to face close monitoring as part of the statewide crackdown.
