Lagos Police restrict Egungun festival to approved venues to prevent clashes

The Lagos State Police Command has ordered that all Egungun masquerade festival activities be confined to designated outing points and approved venues.
Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, announced the directive in a statement on Sunday, explaining that it aims to protect lives, safeguard property, and maintain public safety.
CSP Hundeyin noted that the measure seeks to respect the rights of other faiths and groups during the festivals while preventing clashes between rival Egungun groups, which have been reported in some parts of the state.
The restrictions are also intended to curb damage to private and public property, following incidents linked to recent masquerade outings.
“Egungun masquerades, practitioners, and their supporters must strictly observe these restrictions,” Hundeyin said. He advised masqueraders to inform the Commissioner of Police and request security coverage before conducting any outings with followers.
He added that the command will take legal action against any masquerade or supporter who breaches public order, infringes on the rights of others, or disrupts peace.
CSP Hundeyin called on all Egungun masqueraders, adherents, and supporters to cooperate with the police, comply with the law, and contribute to maintaining peace across Lagos.
