The event, which will be held at the fish river in the Asa Local Government Area, is part of a broader initiative by the state hospitality and tourism development board to highlight the economic richness of the region’s natural resources.
The Kwara State Government has announced the inaugural Afon Fish Festival, scheduled to take place on March 29, 2026.
During a recent site assessment and preparatory review, the Board’s Secretary, Mrs. Adenike Akanni, emphasized that the festival is designed to harmonize nature with commerce by promoting the cultural heritage and tourism viability of the host community.
The festival is being organized as a collaborative effort involving several neighboring communities, including Igbo-Iroko, Pampo, Kankan, Agboyi, Igbo Ede, Gbagbo, Budo Isale, and Olooko.
This joint approach reflects a shared commitment among the local populations to preserve their natural endowments while creating a platform for sustainable economic activities.
Mrs. Akanni noted that the event is expected to draw a significant influx of visitors from across Nigeria, thereby strengthening community participation and providing local vendors and hospitality providers with a much-needed boost.
By celebrating its rich aquatic resources, Kwara State aims to position the Asa Local Government Area as a primary destination for eco-tourism and cultural exploration.
