Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reportedly opted out of contesting the 2027 presidential election, according to sources within his circle and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The ADC had been weighing Jonathan as a potential flagbearer, with senior figures within the party convinced that his candidacy could boost their electoral chances.

A source familiar with ongoing discussions disclosed to reporters that Jonathan expressed reservations over alleged lingering influence within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by individuals “with strong ties to the Villa,” fearing they could undermine his chances if he pursued the PDP ticket.

The source further revealed that Jonathan’s decision was shaped by concerns about facing Peter Obi, who he believes garnered overwhelming support from the Igbo electorate in 2015, surpassing even the backing he received from his own Ijaw base.

Jonathan’s stance is also expected to influence the ADC’s zoning formula for the 2027 presidential ticket.

“If he chooses our party, we will zone the presidency to the South. If he does not come to us, we will have no option but to shift to the North because politics is about numbers and winning,” the source stated.

As Jonathan steps back from the race, the ADC is now considering alternative candidates to lead its campaign in the next election cycle.
