Insecurity: Northern youth urges support Defence Minister

A coalition of youth groups from across the North, Arewa Youth Advocate for Good Governance, has warned that persistent political interference in security operations is undermining Nigeria’s fragile peace and worsening insecurity, calling on political leaders to allow the nation’s defence leadership to operate without undue pressure.
The group made the statement on Thursday in Bauchi through its National chairperson, Adamu Muhammad Abdullahi, saying that Nigeria’s national security must not be sacrificed on the altar of politics. He said that insecurity across the North and other parts of the country requires professionalism, focus and consistency rather than partisan interests.
They observed that as communities continue to bear the brunt of insecurity, with farmers unable to access their farmlands, traders facing constant threats along major highways, and thousands of families displaced from their ancestral homes, political interference in security decision-making weakens operational effectiveness and exposes innocent citizens to danger.
“National security is not a political contest and must never be treated as such,” the youths said. “When security decisions are driven by partisan considerations rather than professional judgment, ordinary Nigerians pay the price.”
The coalition expressed strong confidence in the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, describing him as a professional with the experience and strategic capacity to restore peace and stability across the country.
They warned that undue political pressure on the defence leadership could derail the gains being recorded in the fight against insecurity, urging authorities to grant the military operational independence and full institutional support.
The youths called on political leaders at all levels to place national interest above personal or party considerations, adding that security agencies must be allowed to function within established professional frameworks, free from intimidation or manipulation.
“As youth leaders and stakeholders from the 19 Northern States, we reaffirm our commitment to peace, unity and good governance,” the statement read. “We will continue to speak out against any action that threatens the stability of our nation and the future of our people.”
Abdullahi further urged the Federal Government, the National Assembly and other relevant authorities to strengthen institutional discipline, respect the chain of command and provide full backing to the nation’s defence leadership.
“Nigeria deserves peace. Our people deserve security. Let the professionals deliver,” the coalition added.
