The Imo State Government has reiterated its commitment to fighting drug abuse and rehabilitating illicit drug users across the state.

The Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Mr Ezechukwu Obonna, disclosed this on Friday while briefing journalists in Owerri as part of activities marking the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse.

Obonna said the state government has made key interventions to strengthen the operations of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Imo, including the donation of Hilux vans to support surveillance and enforcement.

He further noted that the Governor’s wife facilitated the renovation of a rehabilitation centre for the NDLEA, to aid the treatment and reintegration of drug-dependent individuals into society.

Obonna commended Governor Uzodimma’s people-centred policies, particularly those aimed at improving the livelihoods of youths, which he said have had a positive impact on drug prevention across the state.

He also pledged the administration’s continued support for NDLEA programmes, stressing that coordinated efforts between government and stakeholders were critical to overcoming the drug crisis.

“I advise drug users and traffickers to desist immediately. The negative consequences of drug abuse are avoidable, and a drug-free society is possible,” Obonna said.

He urged residents to report drug traffickers, describing them as enemies of youth development who must be exposed and prosecuted to safeguard the future of the state
