The Imo State Government has commenced payment of the new N104,000 minimum wage to state workers, fulfilling Governor Hope Uzodimma’s earlier pledge to improve salaries and welfare.
Civil servants in the state confirmed receiving alerts reflecting the revised wage structure, a development that sparked widespread excitement and commendation for the governor’s implementation of the policy.
In an earlier approval, Governor Uzodimma had announced N104,000 as the minimum wage for entry-level workers, N513,000 for medical doctors, and N220,000 as the entry salary for lecturers in state-owned tertiary institutions.
With the new payment structure, Imo State now ranks highest among states implementing above the national minimum wage of N70,000, followed by Lagos (N88,000), Rivers (N85,000), and Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa (N80,000) each.
In a statement signed by Prince Eze Ugochukwu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, the government said the move was designed to strengthen the state’s economy and enhance workers’ purchasing power.
According to him, “Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration is spearheading this significant policy shift, which is expected to have a substantial impact on the state’s social and economic well-being.”
He explained that the wage review aims to boost the financial capacity of workers, stimulate local spending, and give renewed energy to businesses across the state.
Ugochukwu added, “The ramifications of this adjustment will be far-reaching. Increased earnings will encourage spending, thereby driving economic activities and promoting growth.”
