A housekeeper, Janet Daniel and a driver, Stephen Adams, who allegedly stole their employers’ $3000 and valuables worth N2m, were on Wednesday arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court.
The defendants, Daniel, 25, and Adams, 29, who are both residents of Goni-gora Kaduna, are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
According to the Prosecutor Insp. Chidi Leo, the defendants committed the offences with two others still at large on Oct. 20, at Barnawa Kaduna.
Leo said the defendants, who worked for the complainant, Blessing Christian, stole $3000, jewellery, bags and clothes worth N2m.
He said the defendants entered into the complainant’s bedroom while she was at work and stole the items without realizing the CCTV in the house.
The prosecutor said the duo were apprehended by the police and during interrogation, they confessed to have committed the crime.
The offences contravened Sections 58 and 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
Newsmen report that Section 217 stipulates five years jail term for offenders.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In his ruling, the Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendants bail of 500, 000 each with two responsible sureties each in like sum.
Emmanuel said that one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the defendants, while all the sureties should be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.
The magistrate adjourned the case until Nov. 30 for the hearing.
