The police on Tuesday dragged two men before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, over alleged disrespect to a corpse.
The defendants are Femi Moshood, 42; and Nureni Oyekunle, 57.
They are standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, disrespect to a corpse and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.
The defendants, however, each pleaded not guilty to the charges.
.
The prosecutor, ASP Femi Olanibi, alleged that the defendants committed the offences sometime in October in the Adegbayi area of Ibadan.
He alleged that the defendants were found in possession of bones and other body parts suspected to be those of a deceased man.
Olanibi further alleged that the defendants showed disrespect to the corpse by possessing parts of the deceased’s body.
The offences contravene the provisions of sections 38, 249(d) and 516 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.
The Magistrate, Mrs Gladys Olanrewaju, granted the defendants bail in the sum of one million naira each, with two sureties each in like sum.
The court directed that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the respective defendant, while the other must be a religious leader.
She adjourned the case until Dec. 1, for hearing.
