Gas prices surge as 5kg hits N7,655

The average retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) rose in March 2026, according to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

The cost of refilling a 5kg cylinder increased by 12.60% month-on-month, rising from ₦6,799.18 in February 2026 to ₦7,655.73 in March 2026. On a year-on-year basis, the price increased by 4.55% compared to ₦7,322.49 recorded in March 2025.

For a 12.5kg cylinder, the average refill price rose by 15.62% month-on-month, moving from ₦16,997.94 in February 2026 to ₦19,652.83 in March 2026. Year-on-year, the price increased by 6.48% from ₦18,456.24 in March 2025.

The statistics agency said the data reflect continued upward pressure on household energy costs.LPG, commonly used for cooking in urban households, has seen fluctuating prices in recent months, driven by supply and distribution dynamics in the domestic market.

The report did not specify the causes of the latest increase, but market analysts typically link LPG price movements to international energy prices, foreign exchange pressures, and logistics costs.

The latest figures add to broader inflation concerns affecting household consumption across Nigeria, particularly in energy and food-related expenditure.
