Lagos State University (LASU) is preparing to host its 28th convocation ceremony from April 3 to 10, 2025, with a total of 8,711 students set to graduate across various degree programmes.

The event will be attended by prominent dignitaries, including the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, who will preside as the Chairman of the convocation lecture.

The convocation lecture, entitled “Patriots, Citizenship and National Ownership: The Imperative of Collective Responsibility for Nigeria’s Future,” will be delivered by the Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa.

At a pre-convocation press briefing held at the university’s Ojo campus on Thursday, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, revealed that 8,711 students would graduate from first-degree programmes. She also announced that 192 of these graduates achieved first-class honours, underscoring the academic excellence that LASU continues to foster.

Among the graduates, Nwosu Isioma Sybil from the Biochemistry Department stood out, achieving a remarkable Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93, making her the best graduating student (BGS) for the 2023/2024 academic session.

“I am proud to announce that Nwosu Isioma Sybil has made us all proud by graduating with an exceptional CGPA of 4.93. She truly exemplifies the kind of excellence LASU aims to nurture in its students,” stated Professor Olatunji-Bello, praising Sybil’s exceptional accomplishment.

In addition to the 192 first-class honours graduates, 3,076 students will graduate with Second Class Upper Division, while 4,397 will be awarded Second Class Lower Division. A total of 990 students will receive Third Class honours, and 39 will graduate with a pass. Furthermore, 17 students will be awarded unclassified degrees in Medicine and Dentistry (MBBS/BDS).

Additionally, 125 students will be conferred with Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, and 37 will receive Professional Doctoral degrees.

The 28th convocation will also acknowledge exceptional contributions to both the university and the nation by awarding honorary doctorate degrees. Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Otunba Olufemi Olusegun Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, will both receive honorary doctorates in recognition of their significant contributions to national development.

“We are pleased to confer honorary degrees on these distinguished Nigerians, who have dedicated their lives to serving our country and making substantial contributions to various sectors,” Professor Olatunji-Bello remarked, adding that LASU remains committed to promoting excellence and innovation in all its endeavours.

Furthermore, LASU will recognise 971 students who completed diploma programmes. Among them, 123 will graduate with distinctions, 550 with upper credits, 287 with lower credits, and 11 with a pass.

The Vice-Chancellor also noted that the university has achieved significant milestones, including securing full accreditation for 43 out of 44 courses during the 2023 accreditation exercise.

“The convocation ceremony is a significant milestone for us, marking not only the academic accomplishments of our students but also the university’s ongoing progress as a centre of excellence in higher education,” Professor Olatunji-Bello concluded.
