The Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has directed the immediate construction of new male and female hostels, an administrative block, a health centre, and a sports complex at the state-owned Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, to enhance infrastructure within the institution.

Governor Fubara expressed regret that the university had been relying primarily on infrastructure provided by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), describing the situation as unacceptable for a state-owned institution.

The governor issued the directive on Wednesday during an unscheduled visit to the university, following an invitation from the Governing Council for an on-the-spot assessment of the school’s infrastructural needs.

Governor Fubara was warmly received by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka, alongside other council members, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Okey Onuchukwu, enthusiastic students, and residents of the area.

Speaking during the visit, the governor explained that he had come in person to assess the university’s condition, as requested by the council.

“This afternoon, I can say that with what I have seen here, the improvements recorded have been made regrettably only through TETFUND. It is unfortunate that, as a government, we have not done much for a school that is under our control,” he stated.

Governor Fubara then approved the immediate execution of the requested projects, including the construction of: New male and female hostels; An administrative block; A health centre; A sports complex.

He assured the university authorities that his administration would prioritise these projects to improve the institution’s infrastructure.

The governor commended the university authorities for their efforts in maintaining the institution despite infrastructural challenges. He particularly praised the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Okey Onuchukwu, for his effective leadership.

“I urge the university to continue its good work. I especially commend the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Okey Onuchukwu, for his dedication and commitment to the growth of this institution,” he said.

Governor Fubara also addressed the students, urging them to maximise the opportunities available at the university to achieve their academic and professional goals.

“Do not just pass through this school—let the school pass through you as well. Ensure you gain something valuable before you leave,” he advised.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the university’s infrastructure and ensuring students receive a quality learning environment.
