No fewer than five persons were burnt to death, while 10 others sustained varying degrees of injury in a lone auto crash along the Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway in Ogun State on Thursday.

The accident, which occurred at about 11:12 a.m. at the Iyana Egbado axis of the highway, involved a white Mazda E2000 bus with registration number KRD 809 XC.

The vehicle was reportedly conveying 20 passengers, comprising six adult males, 11 adult females, one male child, and two female children.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi Oyewole, said the crash was caused by speeding and overloading.

He disclosed that five passengers lost their lives in the accident: one adult male, two adult females, one male child, and one female child.

According to him, 10 other passengers sustained injuries, while five escaped unhurt.

“The injured victims were taken to the General Hospital, Ifo, and Oreofe Specialist Hospital, Itori, for medical treatment, while the corpses of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ifo,” he said.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathized with the families of the victims and cautioned motorists against speeding, overloading, and other traffic violations, especially during the festive period.

He urged drivers to always obey traffic regulations and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
