First Bank of Nigeria Limited (FirstBank), West Africa’s premier financial institution, has announced the commencement of its 2025 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CR&S) Week, themed ‘Start Performing Acts of Random Kindness (SPARK)’, as part of its continued commitment to environmental protection, community development, and social impact.

This was contained in a statement signed by Mrs. Olayinka Ijabiyi, Acting Group Head, Marketing & Corporate Communications, FirstBank, and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Lagos.

The statement reads: “CR&S Week is a call to action. It is about showing up for humanity, being kind to one another, and proving that even the smallest act can ripple into lasting change. FirstBank believes that kindness is a currency that never devalues, and that is why every year since 2017, staff have gone the extra mile to give back to the communities through its SPARK initiative, while also encouraging people to perform acts of random kindness.

The week-long event, scheduled to hold from October 27 to November 1, 2025, will mobilise employees across all FirstBank subsidiaries, including the UK, Gambia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to carry out charitable and environmental activities.

As part of its climate-conscious initiative, the Bank will plant 20,000 trees in partnership with the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), marking the final phase of its 50,000-tree pledge towards Nigeria’s 2060 decarbonisation agenda.

Over the past two years, the Bank has already planted 31,000 trees, reinforcing its leadership in environmental stewardship.

In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) on gender equality and women empowerment, FirstBank will also collaborate with the Borno and Katsina State Governments to fund medical interventions for women living with Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), including surgeries, rehabilitation, and post-care support.

Throughout the week, employees will spread messages of compassion and empathy across social media platforms, participate in themed webinars, and engage schoolchildren on kindness, generosity, and civic responsibility. The activities will culminate in visits to orphanage homes, IDP camps, and charitable institutions across Nigeria, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the UK.

According to the statement, these initiatives underscore FirstBank’s long-standing commitment to humanity and the environment, aligning with its Green Recovery Nigeria strategy and its sustainability pillars of social impact, economic empowerment, and environmental consciousness.

Since its inception in 2017, the CR&S Week has evolved into one of Africa’s most consistent corporate sustainability movements, inspiring both employees and the public to take part in acts that improve lives and protect the planet.

“This initiative is a reminder that kindness transcends borders and is the true language of humanity. At FirstBank, we are committed to being a force for good,” Ijabiyi added.

With over 43 million customers, more than 820 business offices, and operations across three continents, FirstBank remains a trailblazer in financial inclusion, innovation, and corporate responsibility in Africa.
