FG upgrades Lagos power substations, adds 208MW capacity

The Federal Ministry of Power has announced the commissioning of upgraded transmission substations at Ijora and Apapa Road in Lagos, adding 208 megawatts (MW) to the bulk transmission capacity serving one of Nigeria’s major economic corridors.

The ministry stated that the projects are aimed at strengthening electricity transmission and improving power supply to businesses and residents across Lagos, particularly in areas with significant commercial and industrial activity.

At the Ijora transmission substation, two new 100MVA transformers were installed, increasing the station’s capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA. Similarly, the newly commissioned Gas-Insulated Substation at Apapa Road has expanded capacity from 60MVA to 180MVA.

The Federal Ministry of Power described the development as part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to address longstanding bottlenecks in Nigeria’s electricity transmission network.

According to the ministry, the projects demonstrate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s fearless commitment to addressing the structural constraints holding our economy back while overhauling the power sector.

The ministry added that the upgrades will support the government’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy by providing more reliable electricity infrastructure for businesses and industrial hubs.

It commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the World Bank, the Government of Japan, the Lagos State Government, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the project.

“We will continue to reinforce Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure, close the gap between generation and evacuation capacity, and deliver a more stable power supply for Nigerian citizens and businesses,” the ministry stated.

The latest upgrades are expected to improve the transmission network’s capacity to evacuate available electricity, reducing structural constraints along the key Ijora–Apapa commercial corridor.
