The federal government has cleared the regulatory and compliance groundwork for five new deep seaport developments scattered across five states.
This strategic initiative, authorized by President Bola Tinubu, aims to recapture more than 70 percent of maritime freight destined for Nigeria that is currently being routed through neighboring West African nations due to local capacity constraints.
Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, announced the policy milestone during a military ceremony in Rivers State.
Addressing attendees at the 5th Battalion Army Barracks in Elele which hosted a presentation by the Deep Blue Project Task Group and the graduation of 492 advanced combat officers, Oyetola emphasized that these administrative clearances are central to transforming Nigeria into the premier shipping and logistical center of the continent.
The Minister noted that the newly issued approvals will cut through bureaucratic red tape, setting the stage for advanced maritime infrastructure capable of hosting massive international container ships.
This expansion is anticipated to alleviate chronic gridlock at older coastal gateways and significantly stimulate foreign trade. Currently, substandard infrastructure, lengthy vessel turnaround delays, and severe port congestion cause a massive portion of domestic imports to bleed into rival foreign ports.
Sector experts have expressed optimism regarding the development, noting that the infrastructure rollout will inject vital momentum into the country’s blue economy.
Beyond optimizing customs workflows and clearing backlogs, the upcoming deep seaports are projected to stimulate foreign direct investment and generate thousands of employment opportunities across the logistical, maritime, and overland transport supply chains.
Concluding his remarks, Oyetola stated that these capital projects will ultimately reduce operational expenses for businesses, make local exports more competitive on the global market, and actively advance the administration’s broader fiscal diversification goals.
