FG automates 2026 Teachers’ Awards, unveils fiive-pillar agenda

The Federal Ministry of Education has modernised its selection process for the 2026 President’s Teachers’ and Schools’ Excellence Awards (PTSEA) by replacing manual procedures with a fully digitalised, tech-driven system designed to enhance transparency, documentation, and accountability.

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, announced this during a press briefing in Abuja ahead of the World Teachers’ Day celebrations scheduled for Monday, 5 October 2026.

Developed in collaboration with State Ministries of Education and African Union guidelines, the digital system establishes a credible framework for rewarding teaching excellence.

Speaking on the theme “Transforming the Teaching Profession for Africa’s Future,” the Minister outlined a five-pillar agenda centered on innovation, mobility, artificial intelligence, inclusion, and professional excellence.

She noted that artificial intelligence would support personalized learning and reduce administrative burdens when deployed ethically, while emphasizing that technology must complement rather than diminish a teacher’s professional judgment.

The celebrations, organized in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), will feature a national march-past with teachers from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. A total of 14 awardees will be recognised for their outstanding contributions, with top-tier teachers receiving major prizes and other recipients receiving laptops.

During the briefing, Acting Permanent Secretary Dr. Folake Olatunji-David and Director of Educational Support Services Mr. Gabriel Amudipe Oluwole commended teachers for their dedication.

Representing the NUT National President, Deputy National President Comrade Kizito Kalu also pledged the union’s commitment to collaborating on a strongly supported teaching profession that embraces digital skills and continuous development.
