Ahead of the crucial Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced a territory-wide work-free day for Friday, February 20.
In a special broadcast on Thursday, the Minister also revealed a stringent restriction of movement starting from 8:00 PM on Friday until 6:00 PM on Saturday to ensure a secure environment for the polls.
The Minister explained that the work-free day, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is intended to allow residents to travel to their respective communities within the six area councils to participate in the election of Chairmen and Councilors.
Wike emphasized that the restriction of movement is a necessary security measure, directing all law enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance throughout the designated 22-hour window.
During his address, Wike expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, describing it as a landmark move toward strengthening democratic institutions.
He urged FCT residents to exercise their franchise with a sense of purpose and decorum, noting that the administration’s goal is to facilitate the emergence of quality leadership that will drive peace and prosperity across the territory.
