A brutal attack allegedly carried out by armed assailants on a local farmer, Sulaimon Semiu Owolabi, has forced him and his family into hiding, fearing for their lives.
The incident occurred on his farm at Oke Oyi, Ilorin East, Kwara State, on Sunday, August 10, 2025.
The violence erupted, according to eyewitnesses and family members, after Sulaimon intervened to defend a Christian farmer whose land was reportedly destroyed by herders.
Angered by Sulaimon’s action, the assailants allegedly retaliated against him and his property.
The attackers, estimated to be around 20, vented their rage by setting fire to Sulaimon’s farmlands and stores. The entire five hectares of land, cultivated with cassava, yams, and other crops, were completely razed.
The brutality extended beyond the farm. The group also reportedly attacked Sulaimon’s wife, Abiola Alajanat’s shops in Eyekonrin, Ilorin. Abiola barely escaped the assault with her life.
Furthermore, the assailants attempted to kidnap the couple’s three children; Sulaimon Baasit Tirenioluwa (10), Sulaimon Jamal Temidayo (8), and Sulaimon Faizah Adunola (2). Their attempt was thwarted by the timely intervention of a local vigilante group.
The family is currently on the run, living in fear as the attackers continue to search for them. “We are living in constant fear, not knowing when they will strike again,” a family member, who requested anonymity, told our correspondent.
Sulaimon, a respected member of the community, is seen by many as a victim who simply acted with decency. “He did what any decent human being would do,” said a community leader. “We condemn this heinous act and demand justice for Sulaimon and his family.”
The police have been notified, and an investigation is reportedly underway.
Efforts by our correspondents to ascertain the current location of Sulaimon and his family were unsuccessful, as they remain in hiding to avoid further attacks.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the community, with many now calling for urgent security measures to protect local farmers and their families.
