The Ekiti State Government has approved the disbursement of ₦458.8 million as severance benefits to former political office holders who served at the local government level across the state.
The approval covers officials who held office between 2022 and 2023 in the state’s 16 local government areas. Those listed as beneficiaries include former vice chairmen, council secretaries, councillors, supervisors and special advisers.
The Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr Folorunso Olabode, disclosed this in a statement released in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, explaining that the payment was part of the government’s statutory obligation to former council officials.
According to him, a total sum of ₦458,793,960 was sanctioned to settle the severance entitlements of the affected political office holders, noting that the exercise was aimed at ensuring fairness and compliance with existing laws governing public service exit benefits.
The approval comes as preparations intensify for the next round of local government elections in the state. The Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC) had earlier announced that council polls would be held on December 12, 2026, following the expiration of the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors later that year.
Chairman of EKSIEC, Justice Cornelius Akintayo (retd.), had said the election would take place across all local government and local council development areas between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., urging political parties to obtain the necessary nomination forms for their candidates.
