Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for a fundamental shift in how Nigeria approaches the relationship between governance and prosperity, asserting that the nation’s path forward depends on aligning democratic processes with sound economic policies.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the national convening and launch of the report titled, “Strengthening the Nexus between Democracy and Economic Growth in Nigeria,” the former president challenged the long-held assumption that a nation must choose between democratic freedoms and rapid economic development.

The study, conducted by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation with support from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), provides a framework for rethinking institutional strength in Nigeria.

Jonathan emphasized that for the country to progress, democracy and development must be viewed as mutually reinforcing pillars rather than competing interests.

“A strong democracy must create the conditions for growth, just as inclusive growth must sustain democracy. This is the vision we must pursue at this stage of our national journey,” Jonathan stated.

Jonathan further noted that the study serves as a call to action to strengthen institutions and ensure that the benefits of economic growth reach all levels of society, thereby stabilizing the democratic system.

The former president expressed his gratitude to the participants and development partners for their shared commitment to Nigeria’s progress, describing the report as a vital roadmap for the country’s current developmental stage.
