The Eastern Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has auctioned seized petroleum and palm oil products valued at ₦26.53 million as part of efforts to discourage smuggling and protect local industries.

The auction, which took place at the Command’s Oron Outstation in Akwa Ibom State, involved 14,720 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 14,925 litres of industrial palm oil, edible palm oil, and vegetable oil.

Speaking during the exercise, the Acting Comptroller of the Eastern Marine Command, Deputy Comptroller Esien Esiet, said the disposal of the seized products demonstrated the commitment of the Service to transparency, accountability, and economic protection.

He stated that smuggling activities remain a major threat to legitimate businesses, noting that illegal trade practices distort market competition, undermine local production, and deprive the government of revenue.

According to him, the seized goods were intercepted during anti-smuggling operations carried out within the Command’s area of responsibility.

“The fight against smuggling is critical to protecting indigenous industries and ensuring that local producers have a fair environment to compete and expand,” Esiet said.

He added that the auction was conducted in line with Section 119 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, assuring participants that the process was transparent and provided equal opportunities for eligible bidders.

The Acting Comptroller commended the officers and men of the Command for their commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime borders despite operational challenges.

He also expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, as well as other security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and the media for their support in combating trans-border crimes.

Esiet urged members of the public to support the Customs Service by providing useful information and complying with laws aimed at protecting the nation’s economic interests.
