City Boy Movement denies elitism, state sponsorship

The City Boy Movement has issued a formal rebuttal to a viral video and associated commentary that attempted to characterize the organization as a government-sponsored elitist group.

In a statement released through its National Secretariat, the group clarified its origins and operational independence, asserting that it was established in 2022 as a grassroots civic and political support platform founded on the principles of voluntary participation and democratic engagement.

The leadership maintained that the movement is not a state-created initiative and has never functioned as an extension of the government.

The organization took specific exception to the narrative that it represents a narrow social class or a wealthy demographic.

According to the Secretariat, the movement’s supporters represent a broad cross-section of the Nigerian populace, including artisans, traders, students, farmers, and professionals.

The group argued that civic participation is a fundamental right of every citizen regardless of their economic standing, noting that the patriotism of successful individuals should not be mischaracterized as social exclusion.

Addressing the nomenclature that has sparked public debate, the movement explained that the "
City Boy moniker, popularly associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is intended to symbolize a specific mindset rather than a social category.

Within the context of the organization, the term is meant to reflect resilience, courageous thinking, and transformative leadership.

The movement stated that its primary vision is the mobilization of young Nigerians toward constructive enterprise and national cohesion, rather than the promotion of class distinctions.

The Secretariat further emphasized its commitment to issue-based dialogue and reform-driven leadership, rejecting what it described as artificial divisions being used to frame the Nigerian social landscape.

The movement’s mission, as stated, focuses on fostering unity across various communities and professions, operating under the belief that national progress is built through collaboration across all social backgrounds.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the group's dedication to responsible democratic participation and national development.

The City Boy Movement pledged to prioritize the substance of nation-building over narrative manipulation, maintaining that it will continue to operate as a platform for citizens committed to progress and enterprise.
