…Says Former President was humorous, selfless, loved Abakaliki rice
…Recounts how Buhari stopped ‘enemies of progress’ from thwarting Ebonyi’s future
…Hails Tinubu for honouring Buhari in life and death
The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has paid glowing tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as “a man of humour, discipline, integrity and steadfast commitment to Nigeria,” and noting that his passing has created a significant void in the nation.
This was contained in a personal message signed by the Minister after he appended his condolences in the register at the Federal Ministry of Works headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
Reflecting on his relationship with the late President, Umahi recalled Buhari’s modesty and unwavering support for Ebonyi State during Umahi’s time as governor.
“I last spoke with him during the Salah celebration before the most recent one,” Umahi wrote. “While he was in office, I consistently gifted him Abakaliki rice, which he deeply appreciated. I continued the gesture after he left office. When I sent him Abakaliki rice again, he phoned me and said he hadn’t stopped enjoying it, even in retirement.”
He also recounted how Buhari intervened during a crucial political moment in Ebonyi, helping to secure the emergence of Umahi’s preferred successor.
“When some opponents of progress attempted to derail the emergence of my current successor, he intervened personally. He contacted the national chairman of our party and instructed him clearly that the current governor must prevail,” Umahi stated.
He credited the late President with providing invaluable support to Ebonyi, not just in terms of infrastructure and governance but also in resolving internal political conflicts.
Umahi went on to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honouring Buhari both during his lifetime and following his passing, describing the gesture as emblematic of genuine leadership.
“I deeply appreciate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. Regardless of the opinion of those who speculate without insight, President Buhari himself publicly acknowledged, during the celebration of Tinubu’s second year in office, that Tinubu played a crucial role in helping him fulfil his aspiration to lead Nigeria,” he noted.
The Minister concluded by offering prayers for strength and comfort to Buhari’s family and to all Nigerians mourning the loss of the former leader.
