Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending his long-standing political relationship with the platform that brought him to power.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a high-level meeting at the Executive Council Chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House, Yenagoa. The governor’s declaration marks a major political shift in the oil-rich state ahead of the next election cycle.

While Governor Diri has yet to disclose his next political move or the party he intends to join, the development has already stirred intense reactions within and beyond the state.

Reliable sources in the Government House confirmed that at least 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, have declared support for Diri’s decision. Political observers say this could tilt the balance of power significantly in Bayelsa’s political landscape.

PlatinumPost gathered that Diri’s defection comes barely 24 hours after his Enugu State counterpart, Governor Peter Mbah, also dumped the PDP, deepening the crisis within the opposition party.

The PDP, which has been battling internal leadership disputes and a wave of defections, is yet to issue an official reaction to the development.
