The Bauchi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an Open Defecation Free (ODF) status as part of broader efforts to foster a climate-resilient environment.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Multi-Sectoral Coordination Forum in Bauchi on Thursday, Mashat Mallo, Team Lead at WaterAid Nigeria, highlighted the state’s proactive approach towards sustainable sanitation and hygiene practices.
Mallo explained that the forum was established to drive sustainable solutions and ensure a healthier environment for all.
“By prioritising safely managed sanitation, we can strengthen climate resilience and significantly reduce the spread of infectious diseases,” he said.
He commended the Bauchi State Government’s efforts in enhancing WASH services through a collaborative and sustainable approach, including mobilising resources and engaging communities.
In his remarks, Mr Sama’ila Tela, Permanent Secretary at the Bauchi State Ministry of Water Resources, underscored the vital role of WASH in improving public health.
He urged stakeholders to support the government’s initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable development across key sectors such as health, climate change, agriculture, and education.
“This joint effort is expected to bring tangible benefits to residents, improving their quality of life and reducing the prevalence of infectious diseases,” Tela stated.
Also speaking at the event, Abdulsalam Abdullahi, a UNICEF representative for the WASH project, pledged continued support to enhance access to clean water and sanitation services in the state.
Nicole Kankano, representing Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), reiterated the commitment of CSOs to promoting active community participation in WASH projects.
The meeting, organised by the Bauchi State Government in collaboration with WaterAid Nigeria and UNICEF, brought together representatives from the media, development organisations, and other stakeholders.
