Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has declared a state of emergency on the General Hospital Minna, ordering its complete demolition and replacement with a modern medical facility following years of deterioration and overstretched infrastructure.

The announcement was made during the weekly State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House Council Chambers in Minna. In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Print Media, Aisha Wakaso, the governor described the hospital, built over 50 years ago, as having collapsed under the weight of population growth and prolonged neglect.

Governor Bago expressed deep concern over the dilapidated condition of the facility, stating that it was no longer suitable to meet the healthcare needs of the people of Niger State. He revealed that during a recent unannounced visit to the hospital, he sat on a bench at the Eye Centre that had been in use since his own childhood.

“We have to be honest with ourselves. The hospital can no longer serve its purpose. It is overstretched, outdated, and unsafe,” the governor said.

He disclosed that a committee comprising special advisers and key stakeholders has been established to carry out a thorough assessment of the hospital and provide practical recommendations for the development of a state-of-the-art health facility in its place.

Governor Bago assured that during the reconstruction period, key departments and emergency services will be temporarily relocated to selected primary healthcare centres across the state, to ensure continued access to medical services for residents.

“What we need now is a modern, functional, and efficient health facility that reflects our vision for a healthier Niger State,” he stated.

He also noted that the hospital’s demolition and redevelopment are part of a wider health sector reform initiative aimed at delivering accessible and high-quality healthcare to all citizens in the state.

“Our administration is committed to building systems that work. Health is a priority, and we are determined to ensure that people feel the impact of governance through visible improvements in healthcare delivery,” Governor Bago added.
