…Reconstructed Abaranje Road, Old Dopemu link set for July 2 inauguration

The Lagos State Government has confirmed that two newly reconstructed roads, Abaranje Road in Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area and the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road (formerly Old Dopemu Road) in Agege Local Government Area, will be officially commissioned on Wednesday, 2 July 2025, by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, via a statement issued from Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday.
According to Mr Omotoso, the projects form part of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s broader infrastructure drive, which aims to improve transportation, link communities, and strengthen the economic and environmental resilience of neighbourhoods across Lagos.
He noted that in recent months alone, the governor had formally handed over 36 roads and 5 bridges to residents, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to comprehensive infrastructure renewal.
The newly completed Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road serves as a crucial link, connecting major routes across Agege and Alimosho. The road now provides direct access between Akowonjo Road, Old Ipaja Road, and the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, easing the strain on daily commuters and commercial transport operators.
Omotoso described the reconstruction as a reflection of the Sanwo-Olu–Hamzat administration’s strategic approach to addressing traffic bottlenecks and improving connectivity across administrative boundaries.
He also revealed that Abaranje Road in Igando, situated in one of Lagos’ most densely populated corridors, had been upgraded into a durable, all-season thoroughfare. The road now facilitates easier movement for residents of Alimosho, providing improved access to critical services, schools, healthcare centres, and markets.
The project was executed under the supervision of the Lagos State Public Works Corporation, which ensured quality control and adherence to international construction standards.
Mr Omotoso stated that the impact of both projects is already being felt, especially through better traffic flow, reduced travel times, and the resolution of long-standing flooding issues that previously rendered both roads nearly unusable during the rainy season.
“These infrastructure investments go beyond roadworks. They are about uniting communities, reducing isolation, and supporting small businesses by creating efficient and reliable transport links,” he said.
Reaffirming Governor Sanwo-Olu’s pledge to ensure equitable development across all regions of the state, the Commissioner explained that road projects are selected through detailed needs assessments and prioritised based on economic benefit and community impact.
He reiterated the administration’s resolve to continue opening up inner roads to ease pressure on major expressways and improve urban mobility.
“The delivery of these roads has strengthened connectivity, improved traffic flow, reduced commuting time, tackled recurrent flooding, and bolstered intermodal transportation. More importantly, it has enhanced the socio-economic wellbeing of residents,” Mr Omotoso stated.
He acknowledged that both Governor Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat were intentional in ensuring that key links such as the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road were completed despite economic challenges.
Mr Omotoso described Wednesday’s commissioning as another significant step in Lagos’ infrastructure renewal programme, adding that the governor remains receptive to community feedback and committed to future collaborations that will support sustainable urban development.
