A cloud of grief hung over Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Saturday as family, friends, and colleagues gathered to bid farewell to late Arise Television news anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, fondly called Sommie.

The promising journalist, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her Abuja residence in September 2025, was buried at about 1:30 p.m. after a solemn funeral Mass at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Agulu.

Among mourners was the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who hails from the same town. His presence drew deep emotions as he paid tribute to the late broadcaster, describing her death as “heartbreaking and a painful reminder of the insecurity ravaging Nigeria.”

Obi said:“We cannot question God. When I heard of her death, I didn’t even know she was from Agulu. Before I left Birmingham yesterday, I told those with me that I was returning home for the burial of one of my daughters. Please continue to pray for her and her family.”

Delivering the homily, Rev. Fr. Peter Ezewuzie of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church urged mourners to find solace in faith, reminding them that the quality of life lived matters more than its length.

The late journalist’s uncle, Mr. Obi Maduagwu, expressed profound gratitude to the management of Arise News for standing by the family since the tragedy.

“We thank the management of Arise News for their unwavering support and everyone who travelled from far and near to be with us,” he said.
