A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Hycienth Ngwu, has called on governors in the South-East to follow the example of Imo and Ebonyi States by approving higher minimum wages for civil servants.
Ngwu, a former South-East Publicity Secretary of the APC, made the appeal in Enugu while commending the recent wage increases announced by the two APC-led states. The Imo government had earlier approved a new minimum wage of N104,000, while Ebonyi fixed its own at N90,000.
“I commend the directives of the governors of Imo and Ebonyi States to raise the salaries of their civil servants to a meaningful level,” Ngwu said, describing the move as evidence of the APC’s commitment to easing current economic pressures on Nigerians.
He explained that although the hardship citizens face is linked to ongoing reforms designed to strengthen the economy, wage increases would help cushion the impact while boosting productivity.
“I encourage the governors of Abia, Anambra, and Enugu States to emulate their counterparts and increase the basic salaries of their civil servants to ease the economic transition challenges,” he said.
Ngwu stressed that higher salaries improve local economies as civil servants’ spending supports families, businesses, and community development. He added that rising federal allocations and internally generated revenues have positioned states to sustain increased wages alongside infrastructure projects.
“These laudable moves by both governors impact positively on individuals, families, and the collective productivity of the people,” he said.
