AnSIEC ready for Aug. 29 Anambra council polls — Commissioner

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (AnSIEC) has said plans were on top gear for the conduct of local government Chairmanship and Councillorship elections in the state.

Chief Chinedu Nnalue, Commissioner in charge of Information and Publicity said this in an interview with the news reporters in Awka on Thursday.

Nnalue said training of electoral officials had been done across the three senatorial districts of the state and that the list of candidates would be published soon.

He said only two political parties would participate in the election, with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for all 21 LGAs and 326 wards and Young Progressives Party (YPP) for one LGA and 20 wards positions.

The commissioner urged the electorate to come out en masse to vote for candidates of their choice while assuring that the exercise would be free and fair.

“Preparation is top gear, AnSIEC is almost ready and waiting for the election day to come because logistics have been put in motion to ensure a free, fair and credible poll.

“We have conducted our ad hoc staff training which incidentally is ending with that of Anambra Central in Awka today, that of Anambra South and Anambra North have been concluded in Aguata and Otuocha respectively.

“Two political parties, APGA and YPP are participating in this election with 341 Councillorship and 22 Local Government chairman candidates all cleared for the election,” he said.

He said there may be restriction of movement on the election day and that AnSIEC had received assurance from security agencies to ensure law and order during the exercise.
