The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the Anambra State election, Dr George Moghalu has raised concerns over vote buying and low voter turnout during the ongoing poll.

Speaking after casting his vote at Uruagu Ward 1, Nnewi, Moghalu urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a credible and transparent process. He noted that while there were no major technical glitches observed, it was too early to determine whether the election would be free and fair.

“In terms of voting, there’s improvement compared with previous elections. I can’t say it’s free and fair because if you monetise a process, you weaponise poverty. What’s free about it?” Moghalu said.

He also expressed concern over voter apathy, describing it as a sign of public loss of confidence in the electoral system. “It’s incumbent on INEC to keep improving the process because voter apathy is a manifestation of the people’s loss of confidence,” he added.

The Anambra election features 16 candidates from 16 parties vying to unseat Governor Chukwuma Soludo of APGA.
