Alleged same-sex relationship: One killed, another flees after mob attack in Benin hotel

BENIN CITY — Tragedy struck in Benin City, Edo State, after two men identified as Collins Ajayi and Bright were reportedly attacked by a violent mob at a hotel over allegations of same-sex involvement.

According to reports, the incident occurred on February 14, 2024, when some persons allegedly disguised themselves as hotel attendants to gain access to the room where the two men were lodged.

Eyewitness accounts claimed that the attackers, armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons, forcefully entered the room and assaulted the occupants after allegedly finding them in a compromising situation.

Bright was said to have sustained severe injuries during the attack and was later confirmed dead, while Collins Ajayi reportedly escaped from the scene.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command said suspected community youths allegedly carried out the attack at about 7 p.m.

Police authorities condemned the act of jungle justice and warned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands under any circumstance.

The Command further disclosed that an investigation had commenced into both the mob attack and the allegations of homosexuality involving the deceased and the fleeing suspect.

According to the police statement, Collins Ajayi has reportedly been declared wanted in connection with alleged violations of the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, which criminalizes same-sex relationships in Nigeria.

The police urged anyone with useful information concerning the whereabouts of the fleeing suspect to report to the nearest police station or the Edo state Police Command Headquarters.

Under the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, offenders risk severe penalties upon conviction, including prison terms of up to 14 years.
