In a major political realignment, all members of the Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection, which took place on Thursday, October 30, 2025, was formally announced by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, during plenary after he read the lawmakers’ letters of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).
The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, was present at the session to witness the event.
The lawmakers cited internal crises within their former parties as the key reason for their departure, adding that their decision was driven by the desire to align with Governor Mbah’s developmental agenda and the APC-led federal government.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji, who represents Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency, said their move was a “bold step into the future” aimed at repositioning Enugu for greater political inclusion and development.
“Just come to Enugu and see what is happening there. The governor is doing a lot for our people. We also want to bring our state to the centre,” Nnaji said.
“For too long, our dear Enugu State has remained in opposition, watching from the sidelines as others shaped the destiny of our nation. That era is over. By aligning with the APC, we are connecting our constituency to the heartbeat of national development.”
Before the defection, the Labour Party held seven of Enugu’s eight seats in the House, while the PDP occupied one. With the latest development, the APC now controls all eight seats representing the state.
Those who defected include Hon. Martins Oke, Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu, Hon. Nnamdi Agbo, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji, and Hon. Mark Obetta.
In a related development, Hon. Daniel Asama, representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency of Plateau State, also announced his defection from the Labour Party to the APC.
