Airtel Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, Dinesh Balsingh, has announced an aggressive infrastructure expansion that pairs network growth with a significant shift toward environmental sustainability.
While the company has already increased its total site count to nearly 16,711 nationwide, the next phase involves building 650 new sites specifically designed to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
Balsingh emphasized that the strategy is anchored on resilience and cost-efficiency, noting that traditional reliance on diesel power has historically translated to higher operational costs.
By adopting green energy solutions for these new deployments, Airtel aims to mitigate the impact of fluctuating fuel prices while ensuring that service remains consistent even in underserved and hard-to-reach communities.
The CEO noted that leadership in the telecommunications industry now belongs to those who plan ahead for a rapidly digitizing economy.
This transition to renewable energy is part of a broader commitment to discipline and clarity in investment, allowing the company to support surging data demand without a proportional increase in environmental impact.
Beyond the 650 new sites, Airtel is also upgrading existing infrastructure, with 99% of its sites now delivering high-speed 4G mobile broadband as a foundation for its expanding 5G network.
Through these advancements, Airtel Nigeria is building a platform that allows local businesses to scale with confidence.
Balsingh reaffirmed that the combination of green energy, fiber expansion, and satellite-enabled connectivity will provide the redundancy and intelligence needed to lead the next phase of Nigeria’s telecom growth.
