The Ogun State Government has once again suspended the process for selecting a new Awujale of Ijebuland, citing multiple petitions and security concerns.

The decision was announced on Wednesday in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat.

According to the government, reports received from security agencies and other stakeholders made it necessary to halt the process in the interest of peace and public order.

Nigerian NewsDirect reports that the Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ruled for 65 years and died at the age of 91.

In its statement, the state government described the Awujale stool as one of the most revered traditional institutions in Yoruba land and said the stature of the late monarch had placed increased scrutiny on the process of choosing his successor.

“Given the volume of petitions and security reports before the government, it has become imperative to halt the selection process to preserve the integrity and dignity of the stool,” the statement said.

The government added that its action was in line with the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empowers it to set aside any appointment if it threatens peace, order, and good governance.

This is the second time the selection process has been suspended. In December 2025, the government stopped an earlier exercise over alleged procedural errors that could have triggered prolonged legal disputes.

The latest development comes shortly after 95 contestants, including 94 princes and one princess from the Fusengbuwa ruling house, emerged during a nomination meeting held in Ijebu Ode.

The process has also drawn controversy following claims by Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM1), who challenged the use of a delegate system and alleged exclusion of some family members.

His legal objections, however, were previously dismissed by the court.
For now, the state government has directed the Awujale Kingmakers Council and the Fusengbuwa ruling house to suspend all activities related to the selection and await further instructions.
