The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has debunked widespread reports claiming that five serving governors, alongside several senators and federal lawmakers, are concluding plans to defect to the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party described the speculation as false and misleading, distancing itself from a viral list circulating on social media which suggested a major political realignment was imminent.

The list had named Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Alex Otti (Abia), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) as those set to join the ADC at a planned rally in Abuja.

Reacting to the reports, the ADC’s Deputy National Welfare Secretary, David Itopa, stated that the party leadership has had no formal discussions or agreements with the mentioned politicians regarding a mass defection.

“On this matter, we do not have any information. However, the ADC remains open to all well-meaning Nigerians who are genuinely interested in rescuing the country from its present challenges,” Itopa said.

While denying a coordinated movement of governors into its fold, the party reiterated its readiness to welcome new members individually.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified its own consultations to rebuild internal cohesion. PDP South-South Chairman, Emmanuel Ogidi, disclosed on a television programme that the party leadership has commenced high-level engagements with key national figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida.

Ogidi further revealed plans to engage former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as part of broader efforts to strengthen the opposition ahead of 2027.
