The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as his “insensitive handling” of Nigeria’s growing insecurity, alleging that citizens across the country are “under attack” while the presidency focuses on political engagements.

In a statement released on Sunday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC accused the president of ignoring the worsening killings, kidnappings, and displacement affecting several states, including Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, and Zamfara.

“President Tinubu’s continued preference for attending social and political events in the midst of alarming deterioration of internal security is both unacceptable and irresponsible,” the statement read.

The opposition party faulted the president’s recent attendance at ceremonies and funerals involving political allies, saying his actions contradict his public claims of national unity and concern for citizens’ safety.

The ADC dismissed Tinubu’s remarks in Jos that his administration’s mission is to unite Nigerians, calling them “mere political rhetoric” inconsistent with his governance approach.

It further warned that the government’s “vague assurances of progress” mock the harsh realities faced by Nigerians, noting that several schools in the North have been forced to shut down due to insecurity, while communities resort to paying ransoms to bandits.

The ADC urged the federal government to formally acknowledge the severity of the security crisis, engage directly with affected communities, strengthen joint security operations, and establish a transparent mechanism to monitor the use of security funds.

“Nigeria is under attack. This administration must stop pretending otherwise. The lives of Nigerians must matter more than soundbites and ceremonies,” Abdullahi added.
