The All Progressives Congress (APC) has claimed it is regaining political strength in Abia State ahead of the 2027 general elections, following what it described as mass defections from the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The APC South-East Mandate Forum made the assertion in a statement issued on Monday in Umuahia, saying recent political developments across several communities in the state point to a shift in grassroots support.
According to the Forum, the Labour Party, which currently governs Abia State, is gradually losing its grip as public confidence weakens, while the APC is steadily rebuilding its structure and influence.
The coordinator of the Forum, Chief Onyebuchi Okorie, attributed the renewed momentum to sustained engagement by party leaders in the state, particularly under the leadership of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
Okorie said the strategic efforts have resulted in thousands of supporters defecting from the LP and PDP to the APC. He added that many of the defectors openly renounced their former party affiliations and destroyed their membership cards at various grassroots gatherings across the state.
The Forum alleged that the defections reflect growing dissatisfaction among Abia residents with the performance and direction of the current Labour Party-led administration, noting that the APC is increasingly being viewed as a more organised and credible alternative.
“This is not a movement driven by political elites alone but a people-oriented process,” the Forum said, adding that confidence among APC members has grown significantly as more citizens align with the party.
Describing the development as more than routine party switching, the group said the ongoing political realignment could play a defining role in the 2027 elections in Abia State.
The Forum maintained that the APC is quietly rebuilding its grassroots base through active participation and structured engagement, expressing optimism that the foundations being laid would shape the party’s electoral prospects in the state.
