Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has described the absence of a strong opposition as a disguised form of dictatorship.

George made the call in a statement on Monday while reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey and recent political and economic developments.

According to him, the absence of a strong opposition amounts to a disguised form of dictatorship, stressing that democracy  flourishes through the exchange of diverse ideas.

He decried what he described as growing intolerance for dissenting political voices, describing reported harassment of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as a threat to Nigeria’s federal structure.

George said the intimidation of elected state executives for holding opposing views signals a dangerous drift toward authoritarianism and undermines the principles of federalism.

He warned that policies and actions perceived as weakening opposition parties could erode democratic values and stability in the country.

The former PDP chieftain also said leadership must be anchored on service and sacrifice to be impactful, urging political leaders to prioritise national interest over personal ambition.

George further called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure fairness and transparency in future elections, stressing that the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy depends largely on the electoral body.

On economic matters, he cautioned the Federal Government against imposing excessive taxes that could stifle businesses and worsen the living conditions of citizens, noting that revenue generation should not come at the expense of Nigerians’ survival.

Drawing lessons from international experience, George cited Venezuela as an example of how excessive taxation and suppression of opposition could destabilise even resource-rich countries.

He urged leaders at all levels to protect democratic institutions, respect opposing views and safeguard the welfare of Nigerians, warning that the future of the nation depends on such commitments.
