The Kogi State Government has issued a comprehensive security advisory to residents, urging heightened vigilance and responsible conduct throughout the Yuletide season to ensure a peaceful and incident-free celebration across the state.
The advisory, issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications in collaboration with the Office of the State Security Adviser, outlined safety guidelines for personal security, travel, community vigilance and cooperation with security agencies during the festive period.
In a statement signed by the Ministry of Information and Communications, the government said the Yuletide season, while traditionally marked by joy, travel and social gatherings, often presents opportunities for criminal elements to exploit increased movement and celebrations.
The statement reads partly: “The Yuletide period is a time of joy, travel, social gatherings and renewed community bonds. However, it is also a period when criminal elements attempt to exploit increased movement and celebrations.
“Citizens are advised to remain alert at all times, especially in crowded areas such as markets, motor parks, places of worship and event centres, and to avoid displaying large sums of cash or expensive valuables.
“Motorists and travellers should plan their journeys carefully, avoid travelling late at night where possible, and ensure vehicles are roadworthy.
“Timely information saves lives, and residents are urged to promptly report suspicious movements, criminal activities or security threats to the nearest security agency.”
The state government advised residents to remain security-conscious in public places, warning against behaviours that may expose individuals to theft, assault or other crimes during festivities.
It urged motorists to use recognised transport services, share travel plans with trusted contacts and report abandoned vehicles or suspicious movements along highways and within communities.
Residents planning to travel were also advised to properly secure their homes and businesses, engage neighbours or community vigilante groups, and strengthen neighbourhood surveillance during their absence.
The advisory placed particular emphasis on the protection of children and other vulnerable persons, urging parents and guardians to closely monitor children during celebrations and prevent them from wandering unattended, especially at night or in unfamiliar environments.
The government cautioned against child trafficking, exploitation and abuse, calling on residents to immediately report any suspected cases to relevant authorities.
On celebrations, the government urged moderation and law-abiding conduct, warning against excessive alcohol consumption, reckless driving and violent behaviour. It also advised residents to avoid or exercise extreme caution in the use of firecrackers, fireworks or any materials capable of causing harm.
Residents were further urged to cooperate fully with security agencies and comply with lawful security checks, stressing that all security operatives deployed in the state are mandated to properly identify themselves in line with the governor’s proclamation.
The government warned against impersonation of security personnel and encouraged residents to report any such incidents immediately.
Reassuring citizens, the state government said it has strengthened the security architecture across Kogi State to guarantee a peaceful Yuletide celebration.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and pledged to respond decisively to any threat to public peace.
The government called on all residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant and united, stressing that security remains a collective responsibility.
