Woman, 33, docked over alleged assault, conspiracy

A 33-year old woman, Christy James, was on Wednesday arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court over alleged assault on her friend.
James, who resides at of Barnawa, Kaduna, is facing a two-count charge of assault and conspiracy, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant and two others now a large, committed the offences at Barnawa, Kaduna.
Leo stated that an altercation ensued over the defendant’s refusal to return a handbag she collected from the complainant, Joyce Gideon.
“The defendant collected a handbag from the complainant to attend a wedding ceremony but refused to return it.
“When the complainant went to her house demanding the return of her bag, she was attacked by the defendant and two others.
“They beat her repeatedly without any provocation, and caused her serious bodily injuries,” he said.
The Prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 58 and 224 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
It would be recalled that Section 224 of the law prescribes four years imprisonment for anyone found guilty of assault and occasioning harm.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with one surety in like sum.
He ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, and should present evidence of three years tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.
Emmanuel thereafter adjourned the case until June 22 for hearing.
